About Me
James D Hartland is a full time writer currently developing several feature film and television projects on spec. During the last two years he has established a track record as one of the region’s best up-and-coming talents, gaining widespread praise. He was recently selected by international screenwriting guru and UCLA teacher Wendall Thomas for one-to-one mentoring on the LA Features development scheme, which Northern Film and Media called their most ambitious writing scheme to date.
Other recent achievements include: commissioned for UK Film Council Digital Shorts; commissioned by Close Encounters for Mini Masterpieces; a finalist for the Super Shorts national writing competition; 1 of 15 writers from the North selected for a TAPs development scheme; short-listed for NFM’s Phil Parker (Aardman) feature film mentoring scheme, and interviewed by the Emmerdale storyline department.
James has two years of training on a Phil Parker devised course at the University of Teesside as well as training with Script Factory at the National Film and Television School. He has attended workshops and lectures by: Stephen Cleary, John Yorke, Jimmy McGovern, Michael Chaplin, and Alan Plater, amongst others.
Outside of Screenwriting James has worked for Working Title Films and Endemol UK, as well as directing a Film Council Digital Short. His short films have been finalists in competitions from Raindance, Talent Circle and Supershorts.
