Maxwells is great! Free shipping when the order amounts to over 50 pounds before Vat. I just ordered from them since they are one of the few companies which offer shipping to The Netherlands!

Thank you for the insightful article James!

Informative post. I'm always keeping an eye out for open source software to try out. Celtx sounds promising. I just downloaded it.

Also, check out http://www.osalt.com/
That's where I usually go to find open source alternatives to commercial software.

Um..., since it's free, it's interesting you say that "Celtx might not be the best screenwriting application that money can buy."

The fact that it's free might make it the best screenwriting application that you DON'T need money to buy.

I've long thought I should do something similar. There's a library just a few minutes walk away from me. I've always threatened to go there and do work but I never do.

That's a great idea.

Something that works well for me along the same lines is to take my laptop into a coffeeshop to write. Starbucks works really well for this, since they usually have plenty of electrical outlets, and they charge you for internet access. Since I don't want to spend money on net access, I never have to worry about 'accidentally' spending three hours of writing time looking up facts about the Monkees on Wikipedia...

There's a book I've been meaning to pick up called "Writing the TV Drama Series" by Pamela Douglas. I can't vouch for it, but it sure is well-rated on Amazon. So it must be good!

Right? Right...?

The BBC does have this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/

I found it very interesting. Thanks to BBC America, I get to see some of these productions here and will have to pay attention to the writer's site.

Thanks, exactly what I needed. I was looking quiet a long time for an app under Windows that enables me to annotate scientific papers and stuff like that. I was annoyed that those features are only available in commercial "Pro" versions of other programs or leave those ugly, unremovable "edited with..." marks, like FoxIt or others do.

Well, in PDF-XChange, some sofisticated features are still "unfree" like bookmarks etc., but the basic annotation features are awesome.

If you are lucky and able to use a Linux system, I strongly recommend Okular (KDE/Qt) which has ALL features and is entirely free!

Although it's not about TV drama writing, and it's not particularly relevant to UK writers, I would recommend "Writing Television Comedy" by Jerry Rannow. The biggest thing I learned from that is that every kind of producer is actually a story editor - you are the (re)writer.

And let's not forget, TV uses a different script format from a typical feature film screenplay too ...
